FAQ
Frequently asked questions about insurance for vacation homes
By vacation home, we mean a house where no one is permanently registered or residing. This may include a summer cottage, a ski lodge, or a countryside cabin used for leisure. Other buildings on the property can also be covered by your vacation home insurance, if they are declared when you buy the insurance and are listed in your policy document.
Vacation home insurance covers the building itself, including fixed interior features, white goods, installations, your plot and surrounding land. It also covers personal belongings stored in the house, referred to as “contents.” The insurance applies to damage caused by events such as fire, extreme weather, water leakage, burglary and pest infestation.
Depending on which size of the insurance you choose, it may also include accidental damage to fixed interior (all-risk), remediation of dry-rot fungus and damage occurring while renting out your vacation home.
Vacation home insurance applies to you as the policyholder and owner of the property for private use. If the house is jointly owned, the insurance may apply to multiple owners, if you inform us of all co-owners.
The insurance also covers damage caused by others staying in the vacation home, such as family members and relatives. However, liability and legal expenses apply only to matters relating to you as the property owner.
Both insurances provide similar protection for the building itself, for example in the event of fire, water damage or a tree falling onto the house. Personal belongings are also insured, but to a lower insured amount for vacation home insurance.
Our regular house insurance includes home insurance protection and therefore covers a broader range of incidents, particularly for you and co-insured persons. Apart from liability and legal expenses, vacation home insurance primarily covers damage to your property. As a result, vacation home insurance is generally less expensive than house insurance.
Your vacation home is insured at full value if it’s damaged during extreme weather. This includes storms (wind speeds of at least 21 m/s), heavy rainfall, hail, snowmelt, frost, excessive snow load or if a tree falls onto the house. Compensation may also be provided if your belongings are damaged.
It is important to do what you can to reduce the risk of damage during severe weather, such as securing outdoor furniture, folding in sun blinds and preventing excessive snow accumulation.
Land belonging to your property is insured up to 200 000 kr. This includes permanently installed outdoor features such as vegetation, stone walls and paving, but not swimming pools or hot tubs. The insurance covers similar types of damage to the land as to the house, for example fire, natural events or vandalism.
The insurance covers damage to and theft of items stored in your vacation home, as well as items intended for use on the plot or patio. Coverage applies to you as the policyholder and your relatives.
Your belongings are insured up to the amount specified under the chosen level of coverage (Bas or Standard). Certain items have specific maximum compensation limits. Examples include:
Kayak, canoe, water sports board: 15 000 kr
Bicycles and accessories: 35 000 per bicycle
Golf equipment: 15 000 kr
Ride-on lawn mower: 35 000 kr
Electric vehicle charging station: 50 000 kr
Please note that theft-attractive property (such as cash, jewellery and home electronics) should not be stored in any building other than the vacation home itself.
Yes, the insurance provides compensation for broken windows and door panes, as well as glass in enclosed balconies and patios. Glass in greenhouses is not covered.
Full value insurance means there is no predetermined maximum limit that caps the compensation amount. In practice, this means the insurance can cover almost the entire cost of rebuilding the house after extensive damage. Compensation is based on the property’s market value prior to the loss and may cover the cost of constructing an equivalent house using modern materials and current building standards. In other words, it will give an opportunity to start over again after a major loss.
